“A new school is opening, up there on the hill , gazing with intent the Spires of the town.”
Any school is defined by it’s teaching staff. Therefore, the initial action of the Management committee back in 1961 was to appoint the first team of teaching staff for the school.
The first appointments for the teaching staff of the school took place between February and March 1961. The first Principal of Omagh County Intermediate School (our Omagh High School) was Mr Leitch. The appointments of the first Vice Principal (Mr McCabe) and the first Head-mistress (Mrs Sommerville) followed.
Reading through the minutes from the board of Governors meetings back in August 1961, the 24 teachers appointed awaited the arrival of 645 pupils that entered the school gates in September 1961. The official opening of the school took place on the 14th May 1962 by the Minister of Agriculture at the time, The Rt.Hon H.W.West, M.P.
Omagh High School is proud of it’s history and we are planning to celebrate our 60 years of excellence with a series of events that will start in September 2021 to commerate the first day at Omagh High School. Our 60 year events will be taking place throughout the year and we will keep all our community informed through our social media platforms and website. All staff and pupils, our Omagh High School family, that have been part of this 60 year journey are welcome to take part in our events.
We are 60 , we are Omagh High School, join us in our celebrations.
